Recipe: Deodorant

we’ve all heard about the perils of aluminum, found in traditional deodorant. and there are loads of great aluminum-free / natural deodorants out there (a few faves are schmidts and weleda). so why make your own deodorant?

for one, its way more cost effective! ingredients are readily available and inexpensive. secondly, you also get to control the ingredients. sensitive to baking soda? no problem, just omit it and add more starch. want to create your own scent? customize yours with essential oils that make your heart sing and your pits well… not so stinky.

and quite possibly the best reason to DIY your deodorant? it’s eco-friendly so no more plastic pollution.

because I enjoy the convenience of stick application, I chose to re-use empty deodorant sticks. I popped mine into the freezer for a few minutes before filling to prevent leaks. then load them up and they’re good to go. you can also opt to store yours in a glass jar and apply with a wooden stick or your hands.

DIY Deodorant Recipe:

  • 3 T coconut oil

  • 3 T baking soda

  • 2 T shea butter

  • 2 T arrowroot powder

  • essential oils

combine coco and shea butter in a glass bowl. melt over a double - boiler, stirring occasionally until just melted.

remove from heat.

mix in baking soda, arrowroot and essential oils (I used 10 drops each - rosemary and grapefruit).

let cool slightly.

pour into deodorant stick or glass jar (sticks may leak, cover work surface).

refrigerate for 30 minutes until set.

enjoy!
