the castor plant is a pharmacopeia of its own. named palma christi, the hand of christ for its powerful healing properties, the plant has been used medicinally by the ancient egyptians and ayurvedic physicians. it is time tested ayurvedic favorite.
castor oil is used externally to moisturize, adding a glow and plumpness to skin. it is far richer in vitamin E and fatty acids than most plant oils, making it an especially effective moisture replenisher. it boosts hair growth— apply it to brows, lashes and the hairline. use it for abhyanga or self-massage, especially when ama or toxins are present.
its anti-inflammatory and pain- relieving properties are well won. you can rub it onto painful areas such as joints or the low back and take a hot shower or bath. for deep tissue repair, castor oil packs are one of the most effective methods. castor is bhedana or breaking, meaning it can penetrate scar tissue, toxic build up and cysts or growths. castor oil packs can be used on the liver to aid detox, on the stomach for digestion (especially great for IBS or crohn’s) or over the uterus to aid fertility and promote a healthy cycle.
to make a castor oil pack, you’ll need:
one flannel cloth or piece of fabric (without colors as the castor oil will make it run)
one bottle of castor oil (hexane free)
plastic wrap cut one to two inches larger than the flannel
a towel
hot water bottle or heating pad
glass container with lid
old clothes and towels as castor oil stains
soak the flannel in castor oil until it’s saturated. Place it over your lower abdomen or desired area, cover it with the plastic sheet and apply the hot water bottle. Cover with a towel, lay back and relax for 30-45 minutes. Remove the pack and clean your tummy. Store the pack in a container in the fridge and reuse the same flannel up to 30 times.
castor is also taken internally to promote digestion and relieve constipation. take 1-2tsp with ginger tea at night. this tea can also be taken for rheumatoid arthritis. do not taken internally if you are pregnant or experiencing a bowel obstruction.
